The Quiet Man Filming Locations
Where John Wayne stepped off the train — and the trail that follows the 1952 classic across Galway and Mayo.
John Ford’s The Quiet Man(1952) — starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara — remains one of the most beloved films ever shot in Ireland. It won Ford his fourth Academy Award for Best Director and painted a picture of the West of Ireland that visitors still come to find today. Much of that landscape is exactly where you would expect it: within a short drive of Ballyglunin Park, on the Galway–Mayo border.
Ballyglunin Railway Station — the film’s “Castletown”
The most famous arrival in Irish cinema happens here. The station where Sean Thornton (John Wayne) steps off the train and asks the way to Innisfree is Ballyglunin Railway Station, standing in for the fictional “Castletown.” The station was once part of this very estate, and it sits a short walk from the front door of the house.
After decades of disuse the station has been lovingly restored as a heritage site and visitor centre. You can walk the platform, see the restored signal cabin and station house, and stand exactly where the opening scene was filmed. Check ballyglunin.com for opening times and events.
Cong, Ashford Castle & the Galway–Mayo trail
Most of the village scenes were filmed in and around Cong, County Mayo — about an hour north of the estate on the shores of Lough Corrib. The village still celebrates the film: there is a Quiet Man museum, a bronze statue of Wayne and O’Hara, and walking tours that point out the shop fronts, bridges, and cottages that appear on screen.
Nearby Ashford Castleand its grounds provided several of the film’s most scenic backdrops, and the woodland and river walks around Cong stood in for the courting scenes. The ruined cottage known as White O’Morn, Thornton’s ancestral home, lies out toward Maam in Connemara. Together these sites make an easy day’s round trip from Ballyglunin, threading through some of the most photographed countryside in Ireland.
Stay on the estate where the film begins
No other rental in Ireland lets you sleep steps from a genuine Quiet Man filming location. Guests at Ballyglunin Park can walk the grounds to the station, screen the film in the media room, and set out from here to Cong and Connemara in the morning. It is the reason many film lovers choose to base a whole trip at the house.
