Things to Do Near Tuam
Ancient hills, medieval abbeys, a great small city, and proper country pubs — all within easy reach of the estate.
Ballyglunin Park sits in the countryside northeast of Galway City, between Tuam and Abbeyknockmoy. It makes an unusually good base: quiet and rural, but with a market town, a great small city, and some of the oldest sites in the West of Ireland all a short drive away. Here are the local favourites we point guests toward.
Knockma Hill — the Fairy King’s mountain
Fifteen minutes from the estate rises Knockma Hill (Cnoc Meadha), one of the most storied places in County Galway. Neolithic cairns crown the summit, and in Irish folklore the hill is the underground palace of Finvarra, King of the Connacht fairies. The well-maintained forest trail takes around 90 minutes and rewards you with panoramic views across Galway Bay, the Burren, and Lough Corrib.
Abbeyknockmoy — a 12th-century Cistercian abbey
Just five minutes down the road lie the ruins of Abbeyknockmoy, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1190 by Cathal Crobhdearg Ua Conchobair, King of Connacht. Rare medieval wall paintings survive inside — including a depiction of the Three Living and the Three Dead — making it one of the most significant early monastic sites in the region. It is quiet, free to visit, and rarely busy.
Galway City
Twenty-five minutes south, Galway is one of the most vibrant small cities in Europe. Wander the medieval laneways of Shop Street and Quay Street for Claddagh rings, Aran knitwear, and independent bookshops; see the Spanish Arch; and settle in for an evening of traditional music in the city’s legendary pubs. It is also the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way — the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, and the Aran Islands are all day trips from here.
Local pubs
For a proper local, The Palm Tree is just 0.6 miles down the road — the kind of country pub where the fire is lit and the welcome is warm. In Tuam itself, Gills and Raftery’sare long-standing favourites for a pint and, often, a bit of music. Ask George, the caretaker, and he’ll happily point you to whoever has a session on that night.
